Building a Team of Teams

Performance lives between your teams

Why a Team of Teams

No organisation is a single team. It is a team of teams, and its results depend on how those teams perform together. Yet the organisations that systematically invest in teams usually pour their effort into individual teams and leave the spaces between them to chance. That is where strategy stalls, silos harden and trust and candour quietly break down across the business.

A genuine team of teams behaves like one team at scale. Just as great teams deepen Relationships (trust, candour) and drive Results (alignment, execution), so do great teams of teams.

What it Measures

The Building a Team of Teams Diagnostic works like this: a number of teams do a modified version of the Building Extraordinary Teams Diagnostic. We include additional questions about the interface with other teams. Each team gets a report on the state of their team (results and internal relationships) as well as an outside-in perspective from other teams. In addition, the Dashboard allows us to see the patterns, strengths and misalignments across teams.

The Building Extraordinary Teams Model: four quadrants — Relationships (Candour, Trust) and Results (Execution, Alignment), across the Action and Foundation rows.
Who's it for

The way we use this diagnostic is customised and flexible to the organisation. Examples:

  • Large organisation: a number of legal teams within the broader legal function
  • Medium-sized organisation: each executive's leadership team, across functions
  • Smaller organisation (less than 200 pax): every team in the organisation
